Looking to avenge their heartbreaking quarter-final defeat in the Spring season, What?! went through a grueling off-season and made major acquisitions to retool its roster. Even though it was only a scrimmage, What?! aimed to regain their rhythm as they prepared to steamroll through their division and bring home the ring.
Under the balmy Sunday afternoon sun, What?! found themselves with the ball to start the game and drove methodically, deep into their opponent's territory. Unfortunately, due to rust accumulated from traveling in the Sahara desert and Middle East, a errant Matt on-the-run pass attempt in the Red Spice Red Zone was intercepted by Los Touchitos.
As Touchitos marched towards What?!'s end-zone, a big interception by Tara was negated by the fact that Chris had sacked the QB before the throw. Nonetheless, lightning struck twice as Lance (who had just run from the train station right onto the field to play defense) intercepted the next pass. A back and forth scoreless possession battle between the two teams ensued, until Touchitos, aided by a borderline call by the "Asian-ref-not-named-Felix" on a deep throw and catch on the sideline, scored their first TD with a pass over the middle that Felix barely missed picking off. (The Touchitos receiver juggled and barely held on to the tipped pass).
After stopping their opponent's 2 point attempt, What?! regained their composure and made some game-plan adjustments to their offense. By mixing in QB scrambles along with spreading short precision passes to Alison, Ronny, and Alja, What?! was able to open up the entire field. Touchitos's defense got knocked back on its heels, eventually allowing Matt to connect with Eric S for What?!'s first points of the season. Matt proceeded to hit Chris for the 2 point conversion.
On the following possession, Touchitos were able to drive down the field and score. Lapses in communication on defense didn't help, as What?! was still trying to figure out their new players and their abilities. Touchitos took advantage of the situation to convert on their 2 point attempt as well.
With little over 30 seconds left in the half, What?! decided to use their two minute no huddle offense to try to score before the half. However, some shady clock management by the volunteer ref led to 24 seconds coming off the clock on 1 single pass. Thus, What?! was unable to score before the half and went into halftime trailing 14-8.
Kicking off the 2nd half after stopping a Touchitos drive, What?! rallied to score the tying touchdown on a short pass to Eric A. Elaina proceeded to fire up the defense on the following possession with a BIG LATE AND ILLEGAL HIT on a opponent receiver out of bounds (worth 1 tackle). That, along with a few defensive adjustments made during half-time, enabled What?!'s steel curtain defense to swallow up Touchitos's offense for the rest of the half. The defense went on to force 3 more interceptions, one on the goaline by Eric S and 1 each by Ronny and Eric A. Moreover, Chris, aka "QB's worst nightmare," demonstrated his Fridge Perry like dominance by getting 2 more sacks and harassed the opponent QB into many more wild throws.
Inspired and amazed by Chris's amazing speed and agility at rushing the QB, What?! went on to score unimpeded. Getting the ball back after forced turnovers, Matt capped his day with a touchdown to Felix while also catching one from Tara for six, with Lance pulling in one of the two point conversions.
With that, What?! ended on a high note and locked up their first win of the season 28 - 14.
